The Drinks Business, one of the magazines that consultants at Proodevo read to stay up to date with the latest developments in the wine sector, informs us about the following piece of news:
V&S offsets emissionsSwedish spirits group V&S has committed to offsetting all of its carbon dioxide emissions by planting forests in Mozambique and Mexico. The company, which owns the Absolut brand, is investing SEK3 million (£461,000) in the project. It has already cut emissions by 30% since 2003, and aims to reduce by a further 25% by 2010.

These days when Global warming is a current topic, it is great to see a positive news coverage on the subject and not only the scare mongering that it has been too much of lately.
Not that I do not believe that Al Gore and Co with the movie “An Inconvenient Truth” did their research and have based the documentary on rock solid facts. I mean, who am I to judge the decision of the Nobel or Principe de Asturias committees that have had access to the same criticism as I have…
I am saying, this is such a serious topic that affects our future in general and in particular the Spanish wine industry, so while scientists decide upon if Global warming is a man-made phenomenon or a normal and cyclical process of nature, we owe to ourselves and our children to do our share to reduce the Global Warming. Now, I would love to see less commercial interests as a spin-off effect on such a serious subject, less people riding the wave of us “common” people’s lack of knowledge of what is the cause and what we can expect of the future.
Personally I follow very closely what Scientist Aarno Magnusson has to say on this issue. Not only because he is one of Finland’s most respected wine critics (he is actually the one who introduced Spanish wine into Finland and is an advocate of Spanish wine in this country) but also because he happens to have spent the past 10 years traveling around all over the world and onsite studied the origins and effects of the Global Warming. His information is clear and concise, informative without scare mongering and any commercial interests when it comes to share his knowledge.
